ACT ONE SCENE ONE
Stage opens with the Palace scene in section. All seated – the King and Wives in their complete traditional attires with the chiefs too. The King is seen pointing his staff of authority towards a lady on her kneels who they believed killed her Children with voodoo.
King – Be gone from my presence! And I shall never set my face on you again
(A young man runs to the King’s feet begging)
Prince Oria – Father, she is my mother, not a witch. She did to kill her Children, it was a misfortune that happened, please have mercy father
3rd Wife (Oduwa) – Have mercy? Are you begging for mercy on someone who is a killer? (Fall on her kneels) O my Lord, if she stays our Children and even your kingdom is at stake
(A chief stands up and interrupts her)
Chief Oteze – Don’t say so, do you make decision for the King? O King (bows) thou reigns forever, say your mind and it shall be followed to the letter
King – Should I over look the fly that disturbs me at the middle of my sleep?
All present – No
King – Cowries are not given to pigs, so is mercy to someone like you (pointing his staff of authority to the lady on the floor) Hear me, – as fire consumes dry grass so shall I consume you if I ever set my face on you again (stands up and walk out follow by palace body guides as others quickly take their stand)
Chief Akindo – (still standing, raises up his right hand) so let it be written, so let it be done
See the some of the Chives escorts the accursed lady out of the Palace as the background drum keep beating. The Prince is seen sitting down depressed as the 3rd Wife of the King (his step mother) dances off rejoicing. The 1st Wife of the king walks up to the depressed Prince
1st Wife (Igho) – Don’t cry again, the Lord will help you
Prince – (raises up his head) but you know she did not kill her own, it was a misfortune that happened, my mother is not a witch
Igho – The story told in the night cannot be compared to that of the day; the darkness cannot be so stubborn as to remain when the time comes for the day to dawn. Be happy Price Oria your father the king did not request your mother’s head, come with me and stop crying, eat something for the battle has just began and you need to be strong
A bit far off where the Price sits is Chief Oteze watching all that transpired between the Prince, the 3rd and 1st wives of the King. As they leaves, he walks in, shaking his head
Chief Oteze – The evil that men do will live with them and even after them, as our fathers use to say; the monkey will not be too clever to run through the market square at broad day light, they will certainly catch up with it. May our ancestors make the true plain (bows his head in sorrow as he moves out)
ACT ONE SCENE TWO
Opens with Emelda and Osas walking and discussing when Julie cuts in on them as they return from the stream. After general greetings
Julie – Na god save our King O, that woman is wicked
Osas – Our ancestors are great, they reveal the truth in time, her plan may have been to destroy other Children in the Palace but unfortunately it bounced back on her
Julie – That is return to sender (gesticulating)
Emelda – you people be careful, walls has ears and don’t let the early morning sun deceive you with its brightness
Osas – What do you mean?
Emelda – You can’t just say she killed her Children, where you people there?
Julie/Osas – What! (Surprise at Emelda’s statement)
Emelda – Come to think of it, why must she kill her Children or any when she was blessed to give birth to the rightful heir to the thrown even as a second wife of the king
Julie – Don’t say that, even the greatest oracle of our time, Chief Ezea confirmed it (Osas nodding in agreement)
Emelda – Personally I don’t trust this oracle of ours, I fear there is a lie some where
Osas – Ha! (Moves backwards) I beg of you put me not into trouble. Birds are good messengers when they are not send and don’t forget rumour is a great traveller
Julie – (very angry) what do you mean by all this?
Osas – I am going (walks off leaving them behind)
Julie – Is she calling me a gossip? Why these actions?
Emelda – Are you the only one here? Words thrown into the midst of people has no personally meaning, so stop this right now and let’s go
Julie – (sighs) ok
Emelda – One thing is sure, no matter how much earth is placed on a seed, the seed shall surely come out one day
