 ACT 1 SCENE I

Stage opens with a dead man on the lap of an elderly woman, she is seen crying. A lady crying too with a young man close to her, and a figure (a male to be precise) standing by. All present is full of sorrow as the man moves little afar off the scene and speaks with great pain:

Man (Owie): – if there is truly a God and if there is truly a devil, now I am more convinced seeing how my bosom friend ——– (turns and looks at the diseased, shakes his head and turns again). Why should Osamudiawmen end this way? I did my best to call his attention back to God, but to no avail, kept measuring his life with his success, and yet he was moving around soullessly. (Moves to a seat and sat down) I could remember 23 years ago (nods his head), yes, 23 years ago (smiles), we matriculated together into that famous University of Benin. It was so great that day, and lectures started smoothly. (Bows his head to think)

ACT 1 SCENE 2

At campus, the male hostel in focus. At one corner of the room, five friends (roommates) are seen discussing. The room contains two decked beds, a reading table, some cupboards and different sets of electronics.

Kingsley: – As for me I will not allow myself to be brought low, and that is why I am careful how I behave in public.

Oscar: – Let’s be truthful Kinsley, it is not that you have being disgraced, but you are too afraid not to be beaten up (all laughs)

Kingsley: – I will not agree with that

Omo: – Kinsley, if you say it is wrong, prove it, go out there and let us see.

Osamudiawmen: – Ha ha, what are all these now?

Oscar: – What is all what? (Angry)

Osamudiawmen: – It is okay, all I am saying is that we should learn to respect each other’s opinions. Kingsley has his opinion, so is both of you.

Omo: – Then what is now your stress?

(Knock on the door) Come in. Rose (a female student) enters.

Rose: – Hi guys, what’s up now? (Moves close to Oscar and sits close to him in his bed)

Omo: – Nothing spoil, man nor die, man nor rotten, how far?

Rose: – Omo, that babe mess up big time o

(See Kingsley resumes his reading as Osamudiawmen picks his book, and excuses himself)

Osamudiawmen: – Alright guys, make I go look this book small. So have fun

Kingsley: – I think I better follow you

Oscar: – I know you must follow am

Osamudiawmen: – Oscar!

Oscar: – Bush-shit!

Omo: – Make una read well, all of us go pass, abi?

Rose: – Na today nash tear for back? Forget! We go pass

(Osamudiawmen and Kingsley leaves for study)

Omo: – Ehen, how far now? So that babe refused me in your presence eh?

Rose: – The babe even said she prefers to die than be in your arms.

Omo: – (Angry) Captain you hear that? A whole me! (Hitting his chest) Don Magro

Oscar: – Easy, Easy Omo, you will get her against her will, and if she refuses after, then she will die

(Suddenly Owie enters with bruises all over him, with his cloths torn)

Omo: – Who did this to you

Owie: – (in pains) it is that Roland again

Rose: – What connect both of you together again?

Owie: – I don’t know Rose; remember in last exam; his name was written out as one the people that cheated. He accused me of reporting him.

Omo: – Did you report him?

Owie: – For what, why? I did not report him. His conclusion was that we both sat together during the exam. Since then, he always attacks me with gangs at his command.

Rose: – But that exam was six months ago, why this now?

Owie: – This is the fourth time now Rose

Omo: – He has passed the course during the re-sit last two months. What are his reasons for coming on you again and again?

Owie: – According to him, he needs my girl friend as a ransom

Rose and Omo: – (Simultaneously) What!

Oscar: – Cut off this talk! I have warned you, didn’t I? I told you what to do, but (stands up) you proved holy. The choice is yours. Roland is a strong guy in campus, and it will take a stronger guy to bring him down. And until he is down, no peace for you

Rose: – Which of the Roland are we talking about?

Oscar: – The captain of Saniyos

Owie: – So I suspected

Oscar: – you know what? Owie, you are dancing to a tune that will soon destroy you. The earlier you make up your mind, the better for your educational life and future. O babe lets go, I can’t waste my time with this mature mumu. (Both leave the room)

Omo: – Sorry-o, you better pray harder to your God (moves to keep himself busy, when Owie calls his attention)

Owie: – Omo, come to think of what Oscar is pulling me into

Omo: – what do you mean? Pulling you into what?

Owie: – According to him, he said I should come and be a member of his club, and then I shall be protected.

Omo: – What is wrong in joining a club that promises protection?

Owie: – I don’t (still in pains) believe it is just a club, I have a strong feeling that it is a cult

Omo: – You are entitled to your belief and opinion, but don’t forget you need to stay alive to have a belief and an opinion. (Resume what he was doing before his attention was called by Owie)

Owie: – Omo (he refuses to answer, but he calls again) Omo

Omo: – Yes

Owie: – Sorry that I am disturbing you, but please what is your advice?

Omo: – Ask yourself that question. Ask life that question too, my friend you get to stay alive and that is what is important. You get to be able to think well, without fear or intimidation of any kind. You got to walk free without looking your back always. Your books are there to read, and you can’t read under this situation.

Owie: – Omo come off this, what are you telling me? You are making me more afraid now

Omo: – No Owie, you don’t need yes or no as an answer now from me. What you need is reality, and realities are what I am telling you.

(Silence follows)

Owie: – But if I found out that it is a cult?

Omo: – My friend (smiles), even realities will still be the determining factor.

(Silence follows as Owie meditates on Omo’s statements, as Omo resumes his affair)
